IRON STAR FOUNDATION is a 501(c)(3) organization operating in the DC-MD-VA region. We work through community outreach partnerships with local police, first responders, and veterans to support and sustain healthy communities. We focus on providing opportunities for police officers to engage with the communities they serve while helping meet the most acute needs of those communities.
We mobilize the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors to provide compelling community-building programming to underserved neighborhoods, focusing on children and families in need. We draw our volunteer force primarily from local veteran and active duty military, police, and first responders and their families, continuing their legacy of service and fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose.
We partner with teachers and administrators at JC Nolle Elementary and Houston Elementary to provide enrichment programming, trips, and special events for students from those communities through our partnerships with the DC Metropolitan Police, engaging police officers with children and families in the communities they serve. We help officers engage with students through vision boards, art, holiday celebrations and special events.
We partner with DC (and MD and VA) Police Outreach officers to support youth mentoring programs providing leadership training, life skills, and critical support services to at risk teens, sustaining the proven success of mentoring programs including HYPE IT UP and HONEY BEES, programs run by 30-year veteran DC police officer James “Hammer” Thomas. Through “Link Up,” a successful outreach tool created by Jibrail Anderson of CSOSA, we help target food insecurity, employment insecurity, mental health needs and housing needs.
IRON STAR FOUNDATION is honored to recognize Iron Star families. We recognize surviving familymembers who have lost a loved one to violent crime as Iron Star families, uniting the families of police officers and first responders killed in the line of duty with the families of crime victims in a shared bond, forged in adversity. We provide Iron Star families opportunities to connect and build bridges to safer communities.
We work together with the National Parks Trust to provide enriching experiences for at risk youth accompanied by the police officers who serve their neighborhoods. Field trips include kayaking, hiking, river rafting, snow tubing, and ropes courses, trips to visit national monuments, Nature Center courses at Watkins Regional Park and colonial history hands-on investigative programs at Piscataway National Park.
